Science in the Media Monitor

Observa Science in Society, with the support of the Compagnia di San Paolo, has designed and created the first Monitoring on the public communication of science and technology in Italy, a thorough and systematic analysis of the coverage of topics related to scientific research and technological innovation in the Italian media.

The Science in the Media Monitor (SMM) uses an innovative computer procedure that ensures the continuous and automatic detection and analysis of the articles as they appear in the pages of the major Italian on line newspapers, to select those with a high technoscientific content. The monitoring also includes the analysis of blogs information on science and technology through the study of the use of search engines by Internet users

The SMM was launched in late 2007 and has provided the first results by detecting and analyzing scientific articles published in four major Italian online newspapers in the year 2008: Corriere della SeraLa RepubblicaIl Sole 24 Ore and La Stampa. Beginning in summer 2010 articles from two additional newspapers – L’Avvenire and Il Giornale – are collected and analyzed, and from the end of 2012 other two important newspapers have been added - Il Messaggero and Il Mattino. Thanks to a collaboration with Intext, from 2011 also Italian blogs and social networks are monitored.
